What Was New in Function Point WORKBENCH™ Release 4.0

HTML Reports

Reports can now be generated in HTML format for viewing on the Internet or on an organisation's own Intranet.

Hypertext links are used to link reports together. For example, references to individual transactions within a Transaction List report are linked to the matching transaction details within the Transaction Details report. In addition, a HTML index is generated linking all reports together.

The HTML reports can be opened in any application supporting the HTML format including word processors and spreadsheets.

Recording of Actual Data Element Types (DETs) and File Types Referenced (FTRs) for Logical Transactions

A counter will be able, optionally, to record the actual number of DETs and FTRs used by the Logical Transaction.

By indicating the method of Complexity Rating as Rapid or Automatically Derived, the counter can 'rapidly' select the position in the Complexity Matrix or indicate that the value is to be 'derived' from the actual DETs and FTRs recorded.

These additional details will be printed on the Transaction Details report.

Recording of Actual Data Element Types (DETs) and Record Elements Types (RETs) for Logical Files

A counter will be able, optionally, to record the actual number of DETs and RETs used by the Logical File.

By indicating the method of Complexity Rating as Rapid or Derived, the counter can 'rapidly' select the position in the Complexity Matrix or indicate that the value is to be 'derived' from the actual DETs and RETs recorded.

These additional details will be printed on the File Details report.

Copying Between Counts of Files Attached to Hierarchy Branches

This is an Enhancement to the existing capability of copying between counts. Currently, if the File included in the Copy already exists in the target (Copy to) count, then the complexity rating of the Source count is retained.

When copying between counts, the user will now choose the Complexity Rating for the File in the Target or the Source count to predominate.

On Screen Dynamic Display of Count Data on the Hierarchy Diagram - Function Points, Function Types and Multipliers for Logical Transactions

This is new functionality which displays up-to-date count data in the Hierarchy Diagram as you work. The choice of display items is user configurable. The choices can be set as defaults for the user and can also be modified for a counting session.

  • Display Transaction Function Types - Displays a symbol indicating Transaction Function Type.

  • Display Transaction Multipliers - Displays the Multiplier when it is not equal to 1.

  • Display Unadjusted Function Points - Displays the Function Point count stored for the Transaction and, optionally, calculated for the Component hierarchy nodes.

Extended On-Screen Display of Count Data on the Hierarchy Diagram

This is an on-screen report (static display) which is similar to the dynamic display above but also allows the inclusion of the Function Point contribution of Files and the Value Adjustment Factor. Optionally, the user can also use highlighted Transactions to influence the displayed Function Points.

The display can be extended into simple estimates of effort and cost.

Direct Highlighting of Transactions

Transactions in the Hierarchy display can be highlighted directly. This facilitates the global assignment of Files, Notes and Label / Options to highlighted transactions and increases the speed of counting.

On-Screen Display of Label / Options Values

This is new functionality which illustrates, in colour and/or pattern, the value of a Label assigned to a Transaction directly in the Hierarchy display. The display is maintained as you work and can be included in your Hierarchy Diagram prints.

It provides very effective support for the use of Labels in analysing count subsets.
