Using a Functional Model as the Basis for User Requirements

1 day workshop

A functional model represents software as the users of the software understand it. It consists of the logical or ‘real world’ functions provided by the software and the data used to support the functions. All the components of the model are defined in user terminology so that it can be used for communication between the business world and IT.

The components of the model are defined using the rules used by function point analysis. This means that the model can be easily extended, formally or informally, to provide functional sizing.

At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • build a functional model from a software requirements specification

  • build a functional model of an existing system

  • use functional modelling to establish software requirements.

  • communicate software functionality using a functional model.
